STARTING OCTOBER 1st

WAVE OF CHANGE IN THE WORKSHOPS

Pricing updates

As part of the ongoing development of our services, we are making adjustments to our pricing structure to better reflect the actual costs associated with operating the workshops. These changes are intended to ensure the long-term sustainability of our services and to enable l’Œil de poisson to continue fulfilling its mission in support of artists and cultural organizations, while also fostering the development of new services for our members.

A new pricing structure is also being introduced to create a fairer fee system across different user groups, while maintaining preferential rates for our primary clientele: artists and artist-run centres.

Additional Fees

Certain additional fees are being introduced to better reflect the costs associated with project management, workshop use, and day-to-day operations. These measures are intended to support project administration, promote environmentally responsible practices, and ensure a fairer management of workshop resources.

Project Management Fee

A 8% project management fee is added to the total cost of all production projects to cover project coordination, administration, monitoring, and invoicing.

Waste Management and Sustainability Fee

A 2% sustainability fee is added to every production contract and workspace rental invoice to support the workshops’ environmentally responsible practices. These funds contribute to waste management as well as the implementation and development of sustainability initiatives within the centre.

Minimum Charges

For production contracts, a minimum of 15 minutes of labour will be billed. For workshop rentals, the minimum billable duration is 1 hour.

Overdue Accounts

An interest charge of 2% per month will be applied to any outstanding balance that remains unpaid more than 30 days after the invoice date.

Client Categories

Artistic / Cultural

The Artistic / Cultural rate applies to artists and artist collectives working within the context of their artistic practice, as well as to artist-run centres and non-profit cultural organizations.

Institutional

The Institutional rate applies to public and parapublic institutions, museums, educational institutions, municipalities, government organizations, and private galleries.

Commercial

The Commercial rate applies to businesses and other for-profit organizations conducting commercial activities.

L’Œil de poisson reserves the right to determine the applicable pricing category based on factors such as the status of the individual or organization, the nature of their activities, their mission, and, where applicable, their operating budget.

Revision and enhancement of current services

The adjustments to our pricing structure are accompanied by an expansion of the services we offer, allowing us to better distinguish between different levels of technical support and to develop new options for assistance, workspace rental, and production services. Whether you wish to carry out a project independently, receive specialized technical support, or entrust certain stages of fabrication to our team, this new structure is designed to provide greater flexibility, clarity, and accessibility according to your needs.

Through this revision of our service offering, L’Œil de poisson’s production workshops aim to better respond to the diverse needs of artists, craftspeople, and cultural workers, while maintaining current rates for this client category.

Medium-Term Artist Studio Rental

Two workspaces located on the mezzanine of the woodshop are now available for medium-term rental. Spaces are available at $250 for two weeks or $450 per month, with the possibility of extending the rental subject to availability.

This arrangement provides artists with their own dedicated workspace, approximately 1,085 sq. ft. in size, as well as independent access to the workshops from 6 a.m. to midnight, with no additional charge for the use of available tools. The use of machinery and equipment must, however, take place in the presence of a technician, and additional fees may apply for certain welding techniques.

To check availability and submit a rental request, please complete the online reservation form, specifying your preferred rental period and the nature of your project. Due to the limited number of spaces available, priority will be given to artists whose material practices are suited to the spaces and equipment offered in the workshops.

Workspace Rental

The workshops’ workspaces are available for rental. Depending on the needs of your project, three spaces can be reserved:

Woodshop: For woodworking, cutting, assembly, shaping, and sanding.

Metalshop: For metalworking, cutting, shaping, assembly, and welding.

Finishing Room: A ventilated room suitable for molding, spray painting, and techniques requiring extensive ventilation.

Use of the spaces and equipment is autonomous and subject to the workshops’ current rules and regulations. Rental includes safety instructions as well as occasional technical support regarding work methods and the proper use of equipment. It does not include ongoing assistance or the direct involvement of a technician in carrying out the work.

Production Contracts

It is still possible to entrust the realization of a project to our technical team. The workshops can handle various stages of production, from the fabrication of structures and furniture to the production of wood or metal components, as well as assembly and finishing. Each project is assessed according to its specific needs and the workshops’ production capabilities.

Technical Design

The workshops offer a technical design service to support the development of a project prior to its realization. This service can be used to determine technical solutions, materials, fabrication methods, or the steps required to carry out a project. Technical design is billed at a rate of $60/hour.

When a project subsequently leads to a production contract carried out in our workshops, the first hour of technical design is provided free of charge.

Model Making

The workshops also offer model-making services, including for architectural projects, art integration projects involving architecture and the environment, as well as presentation, exhibition, and artistic project models.

Usage and access

Workshops' regulations

To ensure a safe, respectful, and welcoming work environment that meets the needs of everyone using the workshops, L’Œil de poisson has updated its workshop regulations. These changes are intended to clarify members’ responsibilities, promote the proper use of equipment and workspaces, and maintain safe working conditions for all. We invite members to review these regulations before making a reservation or using the workshops.

    1. Anyone wishing to reserve a workshop space must be a producing Member and must have read and agreed to these regulations.
    2. Members must book a time slot before coming to the workshops.
    3. Members who are unable to attend their booked time slot must notify the workshop team by email or telephone at least 24 hours in advance. In the event of an absence without prior notice, the member will be charged the half-day rate.

    5. Members must use the required protective equipment according to the work being carried out and the machines and tools being used, including safety glasses, hearing or respiratory protection, and closed-toe shoes. Long hair must be tied back, and any clothing or accessory that presents a safety risk must be secured or removed before operating machinery.
    6. The use of machines or tools while under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication that may cause drowsiness is prohibited.
    7. It is prohibited to remove, modify, bypass, or deactivate guards or other safety devices on machines and tools.
    8. Any breakage, malfunction, or unusual behaviour of a machine or tool must result in its immediate cessation of use and be reported to the technical team. It is prohibited to use equipment that is out of service or deemed defective.
    9. Members must use the appropriate ventilation, dust collection, or extraction systems when work produces dust, fumes, or vapours. If in doubt, consult the technical team before beginning work.
    10. Walkways and areas around machines must remain clear. Members are responsible for keeping common areas and workspaces clean and orderly.
    11. Members must complete and update their work log at each visit. If the work log is not completed, the duration of use will be estimated to the nearest half-day by a member of the team.
    12. Production materials belonging to the workshops (wood, panels, steel, aluminum, etc.) may not be used without prior authorization.
    13. Materials and projects brought in by members must be clearly identified and may not be stored without prior authorization. Any unidentified materials or projects left in the workshops for more than seven (7) days may be considered abandoned and removed from the workshops.
    14. L’Œil de poisson’s tools must be returned to their designated location after each use and must remain inside the workshops at all times. They may not be borrowed or rented.
    15. Members are encouraged to bring the basic personal supplies and materials required for their projects.
    16. Members may not use, move, or modify another member’s or the technical team’s materials or projects without prior authorization.
    17. Members must clean their workspace before the end of their reserved time slot. If the workspace is not properly cleaned, cleaning fees corresponding to the hourly rate of the staff required may be charged.
    18. Members are required to treat staff and other members present in the workshops with respect.
    19. L’Œil de poisson cannot be held responsible for the loss or theft of members’ materials or personal belongings.
    20. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in suspension of access to the workshops, without reimbursement of the membership fee.

  1. All production requests begin with a free initial consultation with the workshop team, allowing the client to present the project and receive a preliminary assessment of its feasibility based on available resources.
  2. If the project requires further development, a consultation appointment will be scheduled. The first one (1) hour is provided free of charge. Any additional design or consultation time is billed at a rate of $60/hour and must be approved in advance.
  3. Once the project has been defined, the workshops will provide, at no charge, an initial quotation outlining the estimated costs and timeline. Minor adjustments may be made to this quotation. If the requested changes require a new quotation, its preparation is considered design time, must be approved in advance, and is billed at $60/hour. Production begins once the client has approved the final quotation.
  4. Midway through production, the workshops will confirm whether the estimated costs and timeline remain accurate. If an overrun of more than 15% is anticipated, work will be suspended before any additional costs are incurred. A revised quotation will then be issued at no charge and must be approved by the client before work resumes. If the client declines the revised quotation, the hours worked and materials used up to the point of suspension may be invoiced.

List of equipment

The list of equipment available in the workshops has been updated. Please consult it to find out which tools and equipment are available as part of a rental. Please note that the availability of individual equipment may vary depending on volume of use. Equipment List
