À la fois autel de l’espoir et pièce à habiter, Plastiscapes explore les dichotomies infinies contenues dans le plastique, qui existent en opposition les unes aux autres : l’ancien et le futuriste, le banal et le magique, l’intime et l’industriel, le malléable et le fixe. Studio Rat renonce aux formes industrielles de recyclage alors que les plastiques récupérés sont pressés, fusionnés, coupés et matelassés, réunissant des matériaux disparates en un tout cohérent. Lorsqu’il est activé par l’air, le plastique devient un paysage pour une enquête spéculative, explorant les passés, présents et futurs de ce matériau chargé d’histoire qui nous submerge et nous oppresse.

Both an altar of hope and a room to inhabit, Plastiscapes explores the infinite dichotomies held within plastic that exist at odds with one another: the ancient and futuristic, mundane and magical, intimate and industrial, malleable and fixed. The artists  forgo industrial forms of recycling as foraged plastics are pressed, fused, cut, and quilted, bringing disparate materials together into a coherent whole. When activated with air, plastic becomes a landscape for a speculative inquiry, exploring pasts, presents and futures of this storied material that overwhelms and presses down around us.

STUDIO RAT

Studio Rat est un collectif créatif émergent qui poursuit l’installation artistique expérimentale et le design entre les villes de Montréal et de Toronto. Studio Rat a été fondé en 2018 en tant que site d’investigation sur les plastiques, les structures gonflables et la création d’une communauté entre les artistes Dom Di Libero et Emily Allan. Le duo crée des paysages de rêve gonflables à partir de matériaux jetés qui présentent un commentaire sur la liaison irréversible du plastique dans nos environnements et notre expérience quotidienne. Le jeu, la douceur et la durabilité inspirent l’approche de Studio Rat en matière de création d’espaces et de méthodes de fabrication artisanale, qui s’inscrivent dans un cycle continu de remaniement et de réutilisation.

Studio Rat is an emerging creative practice pursuing experimental installation art and design between the cities of Montréal and Toronto. Studio Rat was founded in 2018 as a site for investigations on plastics, inflatables, and community building between artists Dom Di Libero (b. Montréal, 1997) and Emily Allan (b. Toronto, 1997). The duo creates inflatable dreamscapes from discarded materials that present a commentary on the irreversible binding of plastic in our environments and everyday experience. Play, softness, and sustainability inform Studio Rat’s approach to space-making and DIY fabrication methods, which they engage through a continuous cycle of rework and reuse. Their work has been shown at events and exhibitions across Canada including Arsenal Contemporary Art (Montréal, 2024), Espace Transmission (Montréal, 2023), Nuit Blanche (Toronto, 2023), Art Nest for Toronto Outdoor Art Fair (Toronto, 2023), Artscape Gibraltar Point (Toronto, 2022), and in the United States, in collaboration with Maya Fuhr at SADE Gallery (Los Angeles, 2023).
